Johns and Nowak

They are an English acoustic duo that like to have fun with American music; weaving together mandolin and guitar and singing songs of heartache and longing. Their music is sometimes joyful, sometimes wistful; steeped in the American tradition and all that comes with it - from fiddle tunes to folk songs, from driving instrumentals and gentle ballads; some traditional, some self-penned. We love it

Winner : Mary Kane

Paul Walker and Karen Pfeiffer - The Whole Charade

We are really pleased to have been sent Paul and Karen's new album to share with you for our latest competition. Chris Seaton's review is spot on.

Chris Seaton review about their new album (edited):

Just listened to "The Whole Charade". You will find it very difficult to wipe the smile from my face, what a delight! Firstly, a real pleasure to hear what I knew I would, ie two performers with unbounded ability, chemistry, and industry. But it quickly became clear that there is more here. The production is quite breathtaking, and has moved the duo forward with a quantum leap. There is a confidence here; almost a throwing off the shackles. There is a happiness, a delight. Anyone who has seen them together will already know that something special is building here. This album reinforces that in so many ways.

The two bonus tracks took me to another dimension. The production is so seriously good. Karen's voice is so plaintive and individual on "Play Me A Love Song", so the strings simply wrap themselves comfortably around her. And then the emotion in your voice for "Lift This Weight" screams an affinity with the workers in the pottery industry. And the build of the song to the crescendo is both clever and sensitive.

Grace Petrie - Heart First Aid Kit

We have a signed copy of this fantastic cd for our current competition. Grace Petrie is a folk singer, songwriter, and activist from Leicester, UK. She first exploded on to the national protest scene in 2010 with the emotive anthem Farewell to Welfare, which captured perfectly the spirit of the new wave of dissent in austerity Britain. Since then, she has written, recorded and toured relentlessly. Her unique takes on life, love and politics, and the warmth and wit with which they are delivered have won over audiences everywhere, and she has quietly become one of the most respected and prolific songwriters working in the UK today.

Winner : Tara Burbridge
